Madarao is located in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture on the mainland of Japan. It combines with it’s neighbour, Tangram ski area, operating on a common lift pass and receives up to 13 metres of snow annually.
Madarao is located in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture, between Nozawa Onsen and Myoko Kogen. Cold Siberian winds come off the Japan Sea dumping up to 10-13 metres of snow annually on Madarao.
Mt Madarao reaches a height of 1382 meters and operates 15 lifts, 60% of the courses are ungroomed, so there’s a good chance that you’ll ski deep powder. The ski area features a unique bowl-shape and was host to Japan’s first Freestyle Skiing Competition. Lifts are open daily from 08:30 – 17:00 with night skiing available on weekends.
The neighbouring resort which is linked by the ski runs is called Tangram and when you include this area in your lift pass the skiable terrain is large and caters very well to all standards of skier and snowboarder.

Madarao Mountain Resort is considered a mid-sized resort with 17 ungroomed runs, four powder snow runs, 11 tree runs and the Freeride Park, which has a number of different jumps, kickers, rails and boxes. The ski resort also has Snowmobile Land, where you can try snow rafting or snowmobile tours.
Madarao is the perfect spot for powder junkies. Tree runs are a big part of why powder lovers would want to stay in Madarao. Over the past few years, several designated tree runs have been introduced at Madarao Mountain Resort. These family friendly tree runs allow you to start skiing or boarding in the trees in a safe, supervised environment. They are designed so that there is better access to them, as well as to make it easier to exit after your run.
Crystal Bowl is Madarao ski resort’s steepest slope and offers a challenging 36 degree pitch. So advanced skiers have plenty to keep them amused, especially if there is a big snow dump.
The village is small with a range of hotels, pensions and lodges. Nightlife is developing and now has a number of restaurants and bars. Consider heading into Iiyama at least once during your stay for a bigger variety of restaurants, bars, groceries and ski shops.
Japan is traditionally a cash society. There are no ATMs in Madarao so you will need to arrive with cash. The closest ATM is in Iiyama.
