Portillo ski resort - Chile
Located 160klms from Santiago Airport, Portillo is a classic resort that's more like being on a cruise ship anchored in the Andes with just the one bright yellow hotel and couple of annexe buildings at the head of beautiful glacial cirque lake off the high pass between Chile and Argentina. Trucks rumble up and down all day and you ski over the road on snow shed tunnels. Cruisy through the middle with the unique va-et-vient avalanche proof drag lifts up the steep sides, it's an experience like nowhere else. Warren Miller rates it in his World top 10. All accommodation packages put a new meaning to all-inclusive, with 4 meals a day along with lift passes.
